The Empty Pantry: 4 brunch-worthy eggs benny dishes in Kamloops

Weekday morning eats are usually neither exciting nor complicated — toast, cereal, smoothie, repeat — so the weekend is where breakfast really gets to shine. Is there anything better than an extravagant weekend breakfast? Not in my books!

The reigning champ of lavish morning meals is, without a doubt, the humble yet sophisticated eggs Benedict. The perfection of the eggs benny lies in its total versatility. At its core, all it needs to qualify is a base, maybe a meat, an egg and some creamy hollandaise sauce. The following four are some of the best eggs bennies you can get in Kamloops, and range from classic to wild!

Amsterdam: The Amsterdam Benny

Amsterdam is a well-loved breakfast spot, as told by the long lines every weekend. But, while their specialty is their delicious pannenkoeks, The Amsterdam Benny is worth the wait. This classic looking eggs benny has a little something extra, in the form of aged gouda cheese. Enough said, right? To top it all off, this lovely meal comes with a side of crispy hash and fresh fruit — a must try!

Jamaican Kitchen/Jam Can Cafe: The Jamaican Sunshine

The first time I ever tried Jamaican Kitchen’s take on eggs benny, I could hardly control my excitement. This super fresh take on a classic really showcases how versatile this breakfast/brunch staple can be.

Let me break it down for you: At the base, two Johnny cakes topped with jerk pork, spinach and two poached eggs covered in a spectacular rum-hollandaise sauce. With plans to move to the main North Shore strip on Tranquille Road in the coming weeks, Jam Can’s must-try meal will be even more accessible.

Passek’s Classics: The Smoked Pulled Pork Benny

Passek’s has a variety of bennies, but a pulled pork protein option is a no brainer (although beef brisket comes in at a close second). Aside from a little piggy, the standout aspect of this benny is Passek’s hollandaise sauce. It might actually be the creamiest hollandaise on the planet and your best bet it to just always order a side of it whenever you visit! Conveniently located downtown, this is a benny you can cross off your list before you hit the shops.

This one is for our lovely vegetarians because a good eggs benny doesn’t always need meat. This benny is layered atop grilled focaccia, followed by tomato, spinach, eggs, hollandaise sauce and a sprinkle of feta to tie together a perfect meal. The side of roasted potatoes, which I continually try to emulate in my kitchen at home, are the cherry on top. This downtown staple is also amazing at churning out new and creative specials that are always worth a try.

So there you have it Kamloops, your weekend breakfast/brunch plans cemented. The best thing about these locations is they are all local and, when you pop in for a meal, you are not only getting something, fresh, unique and delicious, you’re supporting your fellow community members. If that’s not the perfect feel-good addition to a lush breakfast, I don’t know what is!
