In honour of Canada 150, I'm counting down best poutine spots in Kamloops.
This French-Canadian staple is the ultimate comfort food, and happens to be one of my favorite treats! So, naturally, when I first moved to Kamloops, one of my first missions was to find my new poutine spot. I diligently went about scouting out the best places to get my poutine fix.
A great poutine is simple, unpresumptuous, but not necessarily easy to execute. The perfect french fries need to be crispy but soft, the perfect gravy needs to be flavourful and silky and the perfect poutine must always have cheese curds!
Here are four of my favorite spots in Kamloops:
1. Frenchies Poutinerie
This dedicated poutine joint does not disappoint! At Frenchies, they perfectly layer your fries and cheese curds to give you the perfect fry-to-cheese curd ratio and slather on a perfectly thick gravy.
They also get wild with their topping options, sometimes making it difficult to pick from all the delicious creations — but don’t you worry because they now offer a poutine flight (for a limited time) so you can try out all they have to offer.
2. The Noble Pig
This Kamloops staple has the fry game perfected, but add their insanely flavourful beer gravy and some squishy melty cheese curds and you have poutine perfection. The Noble Pig also offers up various kinds of poutine that change seasonally. My personal favorite, is The Classic with added Rainer bacon, which I enjoy much more often than I’m willing to admit.
3. Brownstone
I first discovered the equal parts unique and tasty poutine at Brownstone when they were still open for lunch. Now, the hubby and I enjoy it as an appetizer whenever we visit for dinner. This poutine is huge on flavour, with truffle oil fries, aged cheddar curds, mushroom gravy and roast chicken. The perfect start to a lovely meal or after-work appies and drinks!
4. Mittz Kitchen
Mittz Kitchen’s poutine is the newest addition to my list of must-haves. This lovely treat is topped with tender pulled chicken, cheese curds, and scallions, but the standout aspect is the amazing black pepper Tabasco gravy. This poutine is an awesome share plate for any date night, or an indulgent lunch time splurge. Poutine aside, I cannot say enough good things about this cozy Victoria street spot.
Honorable mention: The Sugar Shack
While not officially a Kamloops establishment, this is a poutine that rivals some of my favorites from out east — which is saying a lot! Their slogan, “Best Poutine West of Quebec” definitely lives up to the hype. They also have Montreal smoked meat, which you can enjoy in a sandwich, or on your poutine. Keep an eye out for the next time they pay Kamloops a visit, or visit them in 70 Mile House on Highway 97.
