Revamped Google Earth changes the way we explore the world

In the run up to Earth day, Google has released a brand new version of Google Earth that allows you to explore the world like never before.

And the best part? You no longer have to download an application for Google Earth as it has its own website.

The new Google Earth released on Tuesday comes with an array of new features which offer users additional information about the world and new interactive experiences.

When you search up an area or place in Google Earth, “knowledge cards” now appear in the top right of the screen which provides information about your search target.

The “I’m feeling lucky” feature, which can be accessed via the sidebar to the left of the screen, will take you to one of 20,000 places specifically chosen by Google for their uniqueness. For example, when I first clicked on the feeling lucky feature, Google Earth took me to Miyake Island, a volcanic island in Japan.

Perhaps one the most entertaining features is “Voyager,” an already existing feature that now offers users interactive guided tours. In revamping this feature, Google Earth partnered with organizations such as NASA, BBC Planet Earth and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Voyager allows users to pick from an array of interactive guides, including “the Hidden Worlds of National parks,” “UNESCO World Heritage Sites” and “World’s Most Dramatic Mountains.” With included videos and pictures, these guides take you on an adventure around the world that’s both informative and engaging.

Google Earth now also suggests to users “Points of Interest,” locations that Google think someone may enjoy exploring based on their search history.

The new version of Google is currently available on Chrome and Android and set to be released on IOS and other browsers later this year.
