Some significant changes are coming to Twitter and you should know about them.
Specifically, Twitter has updated their privacy policy which will become effective for all users on and after June 18th, 2017. Users who keep their Twitter accounts after the date will be considered to have automatically agreed to the updates.
Here are some of the most important updates:
Twitter has discontinued support of the Do Not Track browser preference. Do Not Track is a technology and policy proposal that enables users to opt out of tracking by websites they do not visit, including analytics services, advertising networks, and social platforms. According to a statement on their website, Twitter made the decision based on the fact that a number of other platforms have also abandoned it and that an industry-standard approach to Do Not Track never materialized.
"Twitter has discontinued support of the Do Not Track browser preference," reads a statement from Twitter. "While we had hoped that our support for Do Not Track would spur industry adoption, an industry-standard approach to Do Not Track did not materialize."
To make up for the discontinuation of Do Not Track, Twitter is offering users more transparency in regards to discovering how their information is being used.
First, users now have a new Personalization and Data section in their settings. This new section lets users discover how their data is being shared and tracked.
Second, users will also have control of what Twitter recognizes as their interests based on web history searches. In the settings, users will also be able to manually turn on and off interests of their choosing.
So ultimately, what you need to know is that although you won't be able to opt out of tracking by websites, you'll now be able to identify exactly what information of yours is being used.
