Things you need to know this morning: April 24

Start your day off right with things you need to know this morning. Notable birthdays and today’s forecast are at the bottom.

Things you need to know

1. Astronaut Peggy Whitson has spent a record number of days in space

Peggy Whitson has now spent more days in space than any other American astronaut. Whitson reached the milestone as of 10:24 p.m. last night, surpassing Jeff Williams mark of 534 days. Tributes and congratulations are pouring in from all over for Whitson.

2. The NHL’s round two playoff matchups are set

The last two first round series came to an end on Sunday, which means we’re ready to go for round two of the NHL playoffs. In the west, Edmonton will take on Anaheim and Nashville will face off against St. Louis with both series beginning on Wednesday. Out east, Ottawa matches up against the New York Rangers while Washington and Pittsburgh meet for another playoff series. Both Eastern Conference matchups begin on Thursday.

3. Happy Days actress Erin Moran dies at 56

According to Entertainment Weekly, Erin Moran has died at the age of 56. The Happy Days star also starred in the show’s spin-off, Joanie Loves Chachi. Tributes are pouring in for the late actress from all over the entertainment world.

4. The Chainsmokers have a tough time spelling Pittsburgh

Everybody makes mistakes. It seems that people love to hate on The Chainsmokers of late, and there was a prime opportunity to do so with a mistake they made on Saturday night. At the end of their sold out arena show in Pittsburgh, the duo had a “Thank You Pittsburgh” sign display behind them. The only issue is that whoever was in charge of the sign forgot the H, which left a few fans pretty unimpressed and various music blogs trashing the group.

5. New Jersey Devils fans paint the ice

We saw the Prince George Cougars do it a few weeks ago and now the idea has made its way to the NHL. The New Jersey Devils invited fans to paint the ice over the weekend, turning the Prudential Center into a giant canvas. The entire ice surface outside the center circle was painted and it’s quite the sight to see!
