5 things to do on the first weekend of summer

It's going to be a beautiful weekend in Kamloops and there's lots of ways to enjoy the summer sunshine. We've rounded up a few:

The Kamloops Wine trail is having its annual open house on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with festivities happening at Harper’s Trail, Monte Creek Ranch and Privato. There will be complimentary wine tastings, vineyard tours, food options, lawn games and live music. Collect a passport stamp from each winery for a chance to win a summer gift basket.

Hiking and biking

Sun Peaks opens for lift-accessed hiking and biking this weekend. The Sunburst Express chairlift runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sun Peaks has an extensive network of cross country biking trails and lift-accessed trails in the high alpine of Mt. Tod. The mountain also has 16 hiking trails, with access from the village or mid mountain. Head up the hill and enjoy opening day!

The Kamloops Heritage Railway is kicking of the 2141’s season with the Summer Shakedown on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The heritage train will hit the rails with live music and entertainment on board. Tickets are available on the website.

Go for a drive

If you’re interested in a little day trip, take a drive down Highway 1 and try some delicious food out at the Turtle Valley Bison Ranch Fest on Saturday near Sorrento. Day admission is from noon to 4 p.m. and you’ll get a bison burger lunch in addition to access to guided ranch tours, cooking demos by Vancouver guest chefs and local vendors. You can also get tickets for the evening festival, which will feature a bison dinner showcase from outstanding B.C. chefs and live music. Ticket info is online.

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s annual community bike ride fundraiser is set for Sunday. Ride Don’t Hide aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental illness. Funds raised through the event are used to support local programs. Sign up for five-, 10- or 23 kilometre routes. The ride starts at Centennial Park in Westsyde and the route runs along the Thompson River into Riverside Park and back again. You can register online or on site between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and the ride gets underway at 9 a.m.
