Another group of restaurants are making the change to cage-free eggs.
Cara Foods, owner of Harvey’s, Swiss Chalet, Kelsey’s, and East Side Mario’s is committing to by 2020 that all eggs used in the restaurants will come from hens not kept in cages.
Some brands will start the switch this year, which has been applauded by the international animal protection organization Mercy For Animals.
This announcement comes days after Tim Hortons committed to going cage-free by 2025.
In the last year big names like Starbucks, Subway, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and nearly another 100 restaurants, retailers, and food manufacturers have made the same pledge.
Hens that are used for eggs are crammed inside a tiny wire cage for their whole life on a factory farm. The cage is normally the size of a piece of lined paper. It’s not uncommon for a hen to get mangled inside the cage and be left to rot beside another bird that is still laying eggs for human consumption.
“We commend Cara Foods for joining the ranks of the nearly 100 other restaurants and retailers that have pledged to eliminate cruel cages from their egg supply chains—a move that will reduce the suffering of countless hens each year. With this announcement by Cara Foods, it's never been clearer that the days are numbered for egg factory farmers who pack birds in cages so small they can't walk, spread their wings, or engage in other natural behaviors,” Nathan Runkle, president of Mercy For Animals said.
Mercy for Animals is now calling for Sobeys, Metro, and Loblaws to stop using caged hens.
