The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is looking for your opinion when it comes to the next generation of 911 across Canada.
The CRTC regulates telecommunications service providers who supply the networks needed to direct and connect 911 calls to dispatch facilities.
These networks are evolving and they are looking to provide more than just voice services to people in need. These improvements could provide Canadians with access to new and innovative 911 services and capabilities. Now when you call 911, you are connected to the nearest call centre and your location is provided.
Those who are deaf and hard of hearing can now text call centres, a service which may be expanded to the general public. They are also looking to give people the opportunity to provide images, videos and medical records to call centres, which they say could make responses safer, faster and more informed.
Right now, the CRTC is consulting on how to update the service. Canadians can have their say on what services should be offered, who will play a role in these services and how these services should be paid for.
