A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook Taiwan during the early morning hours of February 6th (just before noon Feb. 5th PST).
The shaking caused multiple buildings to collapse, and according to early reports this includes a residential complex. The earthquake struck near Kaohsiung in the south end of the island. According to the USGS, the earthquake had a depth of 23 kilometres and the closest city is Pingtung. Aftershocks are expected to be felt in the region.

It’s unclear if there were any fatalities as a result of the earthquake, but local reports indicate that hundreds of people were asleep when the residential building they were in collapsed. Local media reports that people are trapped within the building in Tainan City and crews are on site undergoing a rescue effort.
