It’s a big day for The New York Times who have been reaching out to sponsors for over a month.
The New York Times “sponsor a subscription” program allows individuals to make a contribution that provides Times digital subscriptions to students and schools across the U.S.
More than 15,500 people have contributed to the program since it launched February 3rd. In that time, they’ve collected enough to give 1.3 million students across the U.S. free and unlimited access to their website.
Throughout the month, people have given donations as little as $4 to, but one anonymous donor generously gave $1 million.
The program currently provides student subscriptions in U.S. public schools only, but more than 830 contributions have come from international sponsors.
Through the funding, the publication will also be launching a live webinar series with Times journalists so students can learn about topics like news literacy, personal finance, persuasive writing, climate change, immigration and the Supreme Court.
“The genesis of the ‘sponsor a subscription’ program came directly from readers who approached us with the desire to help support independent journalism and promote news literacy after the U.S. elections,” Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., publisher of The New York Times. “Thanks to their tremendous generosity, schools that would not normally have had the means to pay for resources like The Times are now able to empower their students with the news and information they need to help them understand the world around them.”
