Scientists have determined that people who have experienced the annoyingness of acne... actually look younger in the end.
Kings College London scientists revealed on Wednesday that people who have previously suffered from acne are likely to have longer telomeres, which are repeated nucleotides found at the end of chromosomes. In none scientific terms, this means their cells could be better protected against ageing.
“Our findings suggest that the cause could be linked to the length of telomeres which appears to be different in acne suffers and means their cells may be protected against ageing. By looking at skin biopsies, we were able to begin to understand the gene expressions related to this,” explained Dr. Simone Ribero, a dermatologist from the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology.
The study used 1,205 sets of twins with a quarter of them reporting that they have experienced zits.
Dermatologists have noted that the skin of acne sufferers appear to age more slowly. Signs of ageing like wrinkles and skin thinning often appear much later. The reason? Probably the increased oil production and a couple other factors.
The study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Next time you complain about a big pimple showing itself on your face, just think… in the end, you’ll look younger than those fresh-faced beauties out there right now.
Talk about a silver lining.
