Canadians have donated more than $8.2 million to the Red Cross Spring Floods Appeal, with $5.8 million raised for Quebec and $2.4 million raised for all other affected regions in Canada.
Because of these donations, the Red Cross is offering financial relief support of $600 to eligible, registered households whose primary residence was damaged by flooding.
This applies to residents in British Columbia and the donation comes from donors across Canada.
"These funds will help individuals and families purchase what they need most during this very difficult time," said a spokesperson for the Red Cross.
In the following weeks, the Red Cross is also working with local authorities to help families on a case-by-case basis.
"An evacuation has an immediate financial impact on families," stated Kimberley Nemrava, V.P. of Red Cross B.C. & Yukon.
"Parents may need to take time off work to sandbag or repair their homes and costs rise quickly for simple needs like replacing food in their fridge, transportation or purchasing a child's favourite toy that was lost. Thanks to the generous donations from Canadians, partners and businesses, the Red Cross has the opportunity to provide direct financial assistance to families to help ease the burden," she said.
You are considered eligible for financial assistance if your household was evacuated and your home was damaged by flood waters.
You are also considered eligible if your home was impacted by slope movement or slides due to the rain event.
It doesn't matter if you have or haven't already registered with your local authorities, you must still register with the Red Cross.
To receive financial support electronically, send the Red Cross one email address during the registration process.
