You will never hear Julie Alexander complain about her job.
“I love my role as an employee of Shoppers Drug Mart!” she says.
Alexander nominated manager Al Avila at the North Hills Shopping Centre Shopper’s Drug Mart for a Community Living BC (CLBC) WOW! Award. From a pool of 80 nominations, Avila was chosen as one of four recipients.

This year’s theme was inclusion. The Community Action Employment Plan, a three-year CLBC initiative, has asked British Columbians to nominate employers who hire adults with developmental disabilities and who create positive, inclusive workplaces. The CLBC WOW! Awards have been handed out since 2009 to BC residents, who in their words, are “creating opportunities and building awareness for a vision of full citizenship for people with developmental disabilities.”
For Alexander, it’s more than a job; it’s sense of self.
“Al and the team at Shoppers Drug Mart have made me feel that my skills matter and I have a lot to give to the company.”
Avila, who has hired employees with disabilities in the past, thanks Alexander instead for what she’s done for him.
“Julie is hard working, smart and fun and I’m proud to be able to work with her and be a part of her life.”
