More Student Spaces for TRU Trades Programs in Kamloops

The BC Government announced new funding for critical-trades seats throughout the province, meaning 70 additional spaces for Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson announced on Monday an additional $6.1 million in funding for 1,429 trades seats at 14 public post-secondary institutions in an effort to reduce wait lists.

“These critical-trades seats match training with jobs in demand,” said Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson.

Minister Wilkinson argues that the shift in education and training to align with jobs in demand benefits students, employers, and the provincial economy.

Monday's announcement was made at the Camosun College Interurban campus in Victoria where the Advanced Education Minister argued that these new seats will help as the Site C dam construction begins.

“We are delivering on our Blueprint promise to increase access to critical-trades training seats for in-demand jobs so British Columbians can find their fit in our diverse, strong and growing economy,” said BC Jobs, Tourism and Skill Training Minister Shirley Bond.

Bond believes that this strategic investment will help ensure British Columbians throughout the province have the skills the government hopes workers need to be first in line for jobs for the jobs of the future.

“Fulfilling the demand for the skilled trades is a priority for the ITA,” said Industry Training Authority CEO Gary Herman.

Herman said, “These additional critical-trades seats places us on the right track to ensure British Columbians have the skills to be first in line for the many opportunities coming our way.”

The government hopes that the increase in training will help the critically needed jobs in industries such as construction, shipbuilding and ship repairs, liquefied natural gas, mining, as well as oil and gas.

This announcement means 18 welding seats, 18 carpentry seats, 18 heavy mechanical trades, and 16 millwright seats for local students at Thompson Rivers University.

The government continues to emphasize the high demand jobs of the future in skilled trades and technical fields.
