City Stops Recycling Pickup Due to Strike

The City of Kamloops will not be picking up recycling effective immediately as a result of the Emterra Environmental strike than began Monday morning.

The City will not collect recycling until further notice from single family homes, multi-family homes, cardboard from businesses, and the City’s four recycling depots at McGill Road, Ord Road, the Mission Flats Landfill, and the Barnhartvale Landfill.

Regular garbage collection will not be affected.

Emterra is the contractor for processing recyclables, and with the workers on strike, the City is not equipped to store recyclables in a safe and environmentally secure manner.

Residents are asked to store their recyclables on their property if possible. If not, recycling can be taken to any of the three Multi-Material BC recycling locations at the Lorne Street Bottle Depot at 270 Halston Avenue or either of the General Grant’s Recycling Centers at 611 Fortune Drive or 963 Camosun Crescent.

Any recycling taken to these locations must be separated and sorted prior to drop off.

The City said in a release that they hope the labour dispute between Emterra Environmental and United Steelworkers Local 1-417 will be resolved quickly.

Regular updates can be found on the City of Kamloops website.
