Improvements for Kamloops residents with disabilities are coming with the addition of a new, wheel-chair accessible washroom at Riverside Park.
Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod announced $50,000 through the Enabling Accessibility Fund to build a family-friendly accessible washroom adjacent to the park.
“The Enabling Accessibility Fund has allowed us to ensure access for residents and visitors of all abilities to one of our community’s most beautiful spaces,” said Mayor of Kamloops Peter Milobar.
The fund commits $15 million each year to improve accessibility in facilities across Canada. The projects this year focus on enhancing access for children, veterans, and seniors with disabilities.
Since the program began in 2007, more than 2,200 projects nationwide have helped thousands of Canadians get better access to programs, services, and facilities in their communities.
“The Government of Canada is creating opportunities for Canadians with disabilities through Enabling Accessibility Fund support to the City of Kamloops project,” McLeod said. “Thanks to the City’s efforts we see first-hand how these kind of projects make a real difference in our communities.”
The Enabling Accessibility Fund was originally announced in 2007 as a three-year, $45 million program to support community-based projects across Canada. The 2013 Economic Action Plan extended the project at an ongoing basis of $15 million per year to continue to improve community and workplace accessibility for Canadians with disabilities.
