An elderly woman succumbed to her injuries after a late night fire along Glenfare Drive on Monday night.
Neighbours quickly worked to put out the fire with a garden hose. The fire was contained to a reclining chair in the woman's suite, which was put out before crews arrived.
At approximately 10:20 p.m., Kamloops Fire and Rescue were on the scene and provided medical care for the woman. Platoon Capitan Troy Grant says approximately 60 per cent of her body had been burned.
“The neighbours had taken her out and were hosing down her hands and her head, which seemed to be the worst effect by the fire. Fire crews took over and did medical care for the woman,” said Grant.
She was transported to Royal Inland Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Grant confirms the woman fell asleep while smoking, which started the fire.
Her age and identity have not been released at this time.
