Students interested in mining will now be able to start their mineral exploration and mining technology diplomas at Thompson River University.
A pilot project initiated by the BC Centre for Training Excellence in Mining (CTEM) now allows students at TRU to take one year of the program offered at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
Students who finish the one-year program will be able to apply their diploma towards a degree in mineral and mineral resources engineering at BCIT.
“This agreement will allow BCIT and our education partners to use innovative technologies to connect students from across the province by allowing them to connect with industry and with one another,” associate dean of Natural Resources and Engineering at BCIT Rob Stevens said.
Students in the program will learn using a blended learning-model which combines online learning and video conferencing.
Along with TRU, three other institutions have been included in the project including The College of New Caledonia, Northwest Community College, and Okanagan College.
