About 170 people attended United Way’s campaign celebration on Wednesday night as they gave an update on their three-year goal.
Since last September, the organization was able to raise $2.1 million of their three-year, $6.5 million dollar goal.
The money will go towards supporting agencies that help out children programs to homelessness prevention in the city.
“We feel like we’re on the right track,” United Way Executive Director Danalee Baker said. “We feel so honoured to be part of this community and to contribute with all of our partners.”
Baker admits it has been a bumpy year with the economic downturn affecting many of United Way’s partners.
“There’s been a few setbacks for some of our corporate partners, but others have really stepped up and we were still able to have a really great first year number,” she said.
Highland Valley Copper’s and DomTar were some of the biggest contributors donating $520,000 and $107,000 respectively.
At the function, Dr. Todd Ring also announced that he would be stepping down from the campaign chair. Replacing him for a two-year term will be Joshua Knaak.
Baker says the organization is going to continue to engage different partners as well as apply for grants as they often do to hopefully reach their three-year goal.
