The British Columbia Government is giving $140,000 towards anti-domestic violence programs in the Kamloops area.
Two aboriginal communities will receive the programs -- about $70,000 each to the Skeetchestn Indian Band and the Tk’emlups Te Secwepemc Social Development Department.
The Skeetchestn Indian Band programming involves tailored workshops to promote healthy relationships and the Tk’emlups Te Secwepemc program is a holistic healing and prevention program for those affected by domestic violence.
"It is imperative we continue supporting Aboriginal organizations working to address domestic violence issues within their communities. The Skeetchestn Indian Band has a great project here to counter domestic violence that will make a real impact for local band members,” Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said.
According to the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, Aboriginal women are three times more likely to experience violence and be assaulted by their partner than non-aboriginal women.
The two Kamloops programs are among 24 other projects being funded by the province totalling up to $1.5 million.
