A couple of kids are able to really hone in on their hockey skills after receiving a net from a friendly neighbour.
For a couple of days, Deb Sharkey had observed her young neighbours playing hockey at the end of their cul-de-sac.
“They were using a cardboard box for a goalie net,” Sharkey explained. “I saw them again a couple of days later and this time they graduated to a plastic storage bin.”
After her husband commented how it would be great for the kids to have a real hockey net, Sharkey knew what she had to do.
Sharkey took to the Kamloops Classified Facebook page to ask if anyone had a hockey net lying around. Within the hour, someone had replied to Sharkey with good news.
“I have no idea what their financial life is. I know what mine is and I just can’t go out and buy a net, but I found a lady who gave us one,” Sharkey said.
Sharkey then picked up the brand new in-box hockey net and delivered it to the boys.
“The cardboard box and the plastic bin just is not cutting it,” Sharkey recalls telling the boys and their parents. “These little boys couldn’t have smiled bigger if they tried.”
After a few hours the boys delivered handmade thank you letters to Sharkey.
The boys set up the net shortly after, taking turns in goal.
“It’s just fabulous,” Sharkey said. “It’s incredible, they’re just having a blast.”
“I just have always been a pay-it-forward person. Back when I was starting out people helped me out and I just kept on with it as much as I can.”
