Power Rangers move out of downtown Kamloops

Downtown Kamloops will return back to its normal state as cranes, cameras and film crews finish up their last shots for the upcoming Power Rangers Movie.

The downtown area was morphed into the fictional town of Angel Grove for just under a week as filming took place.

Several downtown roads were closed during filming, however, sidewalks and businesses were still open to pedestrians.

The reaction from downtown businesses were lukewarm as some saw an increase in business while others were affected heavily by the movie set.

“I think we got through it and I think it’s an experience we will never forget. Some businesses benefited and some didn’t,” said Victoria Weller, Thompson-Nicola Film Commissioner. “I think for a lot of businesses, it was something very different and something to watch for when the film comes out.

“I think people of Kamloops can appreciate the businesses that might have been hit or may not have been able to make money, and maybe people will make an effort of giving them their business as a thank-you for supporting this. I know I will.”

Close to 200 extras were cast to star in action scenes that will see downtown Kamloops destroyed when CGI effects are added in post-production.

While filming in the downtown area will wrap up on Tuesday, the crews will film additional scenes on the outskirts of Kamloops for the next two to four days, said Weller.

The movie is scheduled to be in theatres on March 24, 2017.
