Cache Creek Struck by Flash Flooding

The community of Cache Creek was hit by a ton of water on Saturday, May 23rd.

The town in B.C.’s Interior was on high alert on Saturday after flash flooding struck. A severe thunderstorm warning had been announced for the area, followed by thunder, heavy rain, and hail. DriveBC reported both Highway 1 and Highway 97 were closed because of flash flooding, and crews had to set up road blocks to contain the water.

Marian Greig, who’s lived in Cache Creek since 1978, says that though Cache Creek sometimes rises, it’s nothing like the storm on Saturday evening.

A woman from Cache Creek, Marcie Down, has posted a video to social media of the flooding, beginning in her garage with water up to a man’s ankles. “This is Cache Creek, where the cactuses are blooming this week and the gardens were looking all nice,” says Down.

So, how are you today?

Outside, however, her yard was covered in water. “You can see the drains can’t keep up and they’re bubbling,” says Down. “There’s trees, particles of roots coming down the road. There is a creek running through our yard and the neighbour’s yard.” She reported that some of the hail was the size of marbles.

Kamloops Search and Rescue was also deployed to help with the flash flooding, though they’ve since been stood down. Crews will continue to clean up the damage left by the flash flooding on Sunday.

Both highways have since been reopened.
