Parks Canada officials had to make a tough decision after a black bear and its cub were hit by a vehicle along the Trans-Canada Highway.
The accident happened near Skunk Cabbage Trail, just outside of Revelstoke, on August 5th.
When Parks Canada was called to remove the deceased animals from the highway, which were obstructing traffic, officials learned a two-month-old cub from the same group had been orphaned by the accident.
Since the cub was so young, Parks Canada had decided to put it down, stating it was the humane thing to do since it would not be able to survive on its own in the wild.
Although Parks Canada admits these types of accidents are unavoidable, they remind motorists to follow the speed limit and drive with caution through our national parks.
