Vancouver Aquarium Conducts World's First Surgery on Sea Otter

Veterinarians at the Vancouver Aquarium have conducted a lifesaving procedure on a sea otter by doing the world’s first ever kidney removal.

Corky the sea otter had to undergo the surgery, which also included the first known blood transfusion for an otter. The injured sea otter was rescued near Tofino in August and vets quickly discovered that he had a fractured rib and ruptured kidney. The injuries are believed to be caused from a boat strike, leaving him unable to dive or forage for food. Corky was transported to the Rescue Centre for treatment, where it was clear he would need to undergo surgery.

Elfin, one of four rescued sea otters at the Vancouver Aquarium was the blood donor for the transfusion, and he was also transferred to the Rescue Centre in preparation for the surgery. According to staff, the surgery went as well as can be expected and Corky is currently in critical condition with a very guarded prognosis. He will receive 24-hour care until his condition improves.
