We’re learning more about the couple that was seriously injured during a dog attack on Christmas Day in Fort St. John.
Robin Elgie and Wendy Lee Baker were seriously injured when two pit bulls tore through their home and attacked the couple. According to their friend Kim Smith Babcock, the dogs chased Wendy around her laundry room and bedroom biting her multiple times. The dogs then turned their attention to Robin and began to attack the 66-year-old man. Babcock says the dogs chewed both of Robin’s arms to shreds.
Police eventually shot and killed the dogs and the couple was rushed to hospital. Robin was flown to an Edmonton hospital in critical condition where he remains in intensive care. He has undergone three surgeries as his arms were extremely damaged. Doctors are working to reattach tendons to save his arms.
According to his daughter Sheryl, doctors think they will have to amputate both of Robin’s hands as a result of the attack. Sheryl is by her father’s side in Edmonton as he continues to undergo surgeries.
“Dad is doing much better, he is coherent now and the surgeon has had some equipment fashioned for him to be able to eat and drink,” said Sheryl on social media.
Babcock has started a Go Fund Me campaign for the couple as they have a long road of recovery before them, both physically and mentally. The campaign has already surpassed its goal of $10,000 as more than 120 people have donated to the cause.
Babcock says Robin has had visitors and is in good spirits as he works towards recovery. Sheryl says her dad is exhausted after each surgery as they take three to four hours. But afterwards he tries to talk to as many people as possible on the phone to let them know he is doing okay.
It is still unclear who the dogs belonged to or how they entered the home. Police in Fort St. John continue to investigate the incident.
