Vancouver Police Release Photos of Suspected Serial Bank Robber

UPDATE: The VPD has announced they have arrested the bank robbery suspect known as the "smiling bandit." Following the public appeal that was issued on Thursday, the man as arrested Thursday night while attempting to rob his 10th bank, a TD Bank in Burnaby.

“With advances in video technology, evidence collection and security measures at banks, it's not a matter of if you will caught for robbing a bank, it's a matter of when,” said VPD spokesperson Sergeant Randy Fincham.

The man's name has not been released as charges are still pending.

Last month, nine banks were robbed throughout Vancouver and Burnaby and police believe they were all committed by the same man. In all of the robberies, the suspect stated that he was armed with a weapon. The following banks were recently robbed:

  • January 20th
    10:00 a.m.
    TD Bank – 3710 Canada Way, Burnaby
  • January 26th
    3:30 p.m.
    CIBC – 2890 Grandview Highway, Vancouver
  • January 29th
    9:45 a.m.
    BMO – 3290 Grandview Highway, Vancouver
  • January 29th
    9:55 a.m.
    BMO – 3263 Kingsway Avenue, Burnaby
  • February 2nd
    4:00 p.m.
    TD Bank – 2396 E. Broadway, Vancouver
  • February 5th
    6:30 p.m.
    TD Bank – 4993 Kingsway Avenue, Burnaby
  • February 10th
    5:00 p.m.
    TD Bank – 3710 Canada Way, Burnaby
  • February 13th
    3:30 p.m.
    BMO – 3263 Kingsway, Vancouver
  • February 17th
    3:30 p.m.
    CIBC – 2890 Grandview Highway, Vancouver

The suspect is described as South Asian, in his 20s, 5’5” tall, with a skinny build and short black hair that is shaved on the sides. Police are asking anyone who has information or who may recognize the suspect to contact the Vancouver Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
