A special air quality statement has been issued for the North Okanagan and East Columbia region by Environment Canada.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the road dust advisory is also in effect for Burns Lake, Houston, and Smithers as well as Golden.
A high concentration of coarse material is expected to persist in these areas until there is precipitation or streets are cleared of winter traction material. Levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations.
People with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise near busy roads until the advisory is lifted. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.
