A Chilliwack baby that was born prematurely and severely ill whose parents were trying to treat her with cannabis oil has died.
Mary-Jane Pierce passed away on Friday at 7:00 p.m. of natural causes; she was born at 25 weeks with serious problems such as brain bleeding. Her parents, Justin Pierce and Michelle Arnold, both 21, had been trying to keep the baby alive by using doctor approved cannabis oil.
Mary-Jane would suffer as many as 100 seizures a day, but her father said that once she received the oil, the seizures would stop and her stats would recover. While her parents worked to keep their baby alive, they were also battling against the provincial government as the Ministry of Children and Family Development wanted to take the child off life-support.
The ministry chose to take Mary-Jane off of her ventilator after the couple handed over temporary custody of the child. Mary-Jane was born on April 5th, 2015 and was under the guardianship of the Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services Society (FVASFSS).
The couple lost another premature baby on February 8th as he was born at just 20 weeks, weighing 12 oz. Justin Pierce has taken to social media to announce the tragedies, but says he is looking for free legal support to sue the B.C. government and file a petition in supreme court.
