Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said around 150 police officers will be sent to Fort McMurray after a request from the Alberta RCMP.

The officers being deployed are primarily tactical troop members and traffic service officers.

Vermeulen said these members are accustomed to being redeployed on short notice for serious events.

“In order to ensure that general duty and core policing services were not disrupted local needs and contingencies were taken into consideration when identifying which police officers will go to Alberta,” said Vermeulen. “Police resources will come from communities from across British Columbia and will not adversely affect any one RCMP Detachment.”

The fire, which grew to over 204,000 hectares, reached as close as 25 kilometres from the Saskatchewan border by Monday.
