A parrot refuge facility in Coombs made the news in June because the owner and operator died and the birds had to be removed from the facility.

According to the World Parrot Refuge (WPR), owner Wendy Huntbatch died in February, and since then they’ve been struggling to keep the facility’s doors open.

There were 584 birds living in the facility and some were not in good condition. Some of the larger birds had anxiety and self-mutilation issues.

Many of the birds spent a lot of time walking on the floor of the facility, which WPR Community Support Central said was “absolutely filthy” and could have potentially been covered with bacteria.

The good news is all of the birds have now been removed from the facility.

Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Surrey announced the news on Facebook.

“This journey has honestly been longer than we had hoped and along the way has involved much blood, sweat and many tears. There has also been some laughs, provided to us by the parrots themselves as they were happy to share their beautiful and comical personalities with us.”

Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary has been helping relocate the birds since finding out about the condition they were living in.

The real work will start now.

Every bird will need to be adopted and placed in a safe and welcoming home.

So far, $35,535 has been raised for the parrots on a YouCaring page and donations of food, toys and volunteer hours are still needed.

The birds have started the process to find their perfect match. If you’re interested in adopting one of the birds, you can fill out an adoption form online.

“This is not the end for these birds, nor for us as we now need to concentrate on the adoption process and finding new homes for each and every bird. There are so many sweet birds, funny birds and some that will need a little TLC,” the community support Facebook read.
