British Columbia is hoping that hunters and hikers can help count the number of moose in the province.
The province has created a new app that will help track moose. The tool will let people help wildlife biologists monitor moose populations and inform conservation efforts.
Users can download the app and upload information on the number, sex and location of moose they encounter directly to an online database. The app also includes a digital version of the 2016-18 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis and a summary of hunting regulations throughout the province.
According to WildSafe BC’s wildlife alert reporting program, there has been one moose sighting in Kelowna in the last 30 days. That moose was injured/distressed and it was “destroyed” by the Conservation Officer Service.
"Hunters hold a tremendous amount of knowledge about what's happening out on the landscape,” explained Ross Peck, chair, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.
“They have long supported - and participated in - important conservation initiatives, and this app provides a new means for them to contribute to the sustainable management of wildlife in B.C."
Jim Glaciar, president, B.C. Wildlife Federation said this app creates a new way to approach moose inventory.
“It provides an innovative approach to moose inventory and gives the public across the province an important role in collecting and reporting better information to manage this species."
The province estimates that there are currently between 120,000 to 200,000 moose in British Columbia.
