RCMP believe that high winds caused the tree to break causing this accident. On Friday afternoon, the Surrey RCMP and emergency crews were called to Clayton Park.

When they arrived they found Salaam pinned under a tree. Firefighters were able to rescue the teenager, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up in his memory.

Steve Tammy Larson, the organizer of this GoFundMe said Salaam was a beautiful young man.

“Shakir Salaam's beautiful soul and kindness touched so many lives and he was taken too soon at only 16,” the page states.

"His high school, Clayton Heights Secondary School and the surrounding community of Clayton Heights in Surrey, BC is in mourning; family, friends, acquaintances teachers, administrators and the community are in shock right now."

The devoted rugby player played for his high school Clayton Heights in Surrey.

More than $6,000 has been raised for Salaam’s family in less than ten hours. This money will go towards funeral expenses, meals for the family, time to grieve and heal and counselling services.
