Live it Now: Identity

Hello friends!

I hope you’re enjoying the first week of autumn! Mother Nature wows me with her magnificent artistry every year! Fleeting moments of unedited beauty, “S”he really is spectacular.

I am honestly interested in where these words lead me, as the muse to this post did not intend to be, but is nonetheless.

While getting to know someone today, I was asked (rhetorically) ‘you’re a runner, right?’. I responded with, ‘yes’… and then thought… is that how I identify?

It became this interesting dialogue in my head, unbeknownst to those around me. In our home, we have very open, honest conversations about understanding how an individual may choose to identify, and it is 150,000% their choice to do so without repercussions of from society on any level.

I’m suggesting a lighter form of this, super generic.

It just got me thinking… what am I? Who am I? Am I a mom first, a woman, a spouse, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a cousin, a runner, a business owner, a friend… is my identity determined by emotions? Capabilities? My gender? My status?

I look with admiration at the yoga instructors who share space with me every day. Are they yogis first? Is their hearts truest desire what defines them.

Ah… there it is.. it’s not identity I’m trying to ascertain… it’s definition.

Dina = ? Webster dictionary isn’t much help here.

Can I be a kaleidoscope of things and be whole? Can I be so colourful that I am not just one colour? Ooouuffff! My mind is swirling.

Mother Nature’s autumn, is just that… it needs no definition. You know what it is. Life, however, it can be defined by your position in society!?? Oh man, I hope that’s not true!

It comes back (for me) to how we feel… really feel… and you’re the only one who knows for sure. We all wear many hats in our day to day lives. But which one is the truest YOU? Which one fits the best, the most comfortable?

I cannot imagine how frustrating, liberating and empowering it must be for humans who find their truest self and take the courageous and necessary steps to openly identify as such!

Inspiring confidence in the world less travelled by closed minded individuals just trying to feel something more tangible than the car they drive or the roof they sleep under, without even realizing it. OH my, it is a conundrum indeed. (insert heavy sigh here).

Nope didn’t figure anything out, but it was fun to explore the thoughts dancing in my head and heart.

Sometimes all we are is an exhale in a moment of tragedy, of heartbreaking news from a friend whose painful journey is just about to begin.

But are they defined by that, some would say… with a long pause… yes.

It is, after all, their lives and it’s worth living!

So live it in full colour, make no apologies for how you define or identify YOURself!

Just live it…NOW!
