Live it Now: Sensation Junkies

Hello Friends! Hope everyone had a lovely Mother’s Day weekend.

As the wellness journey continues, I find myself hooked on a feeling... well many feelings to be honest. During module one of yoga teacher training the anatomy lecturer Rachel Scott, who manifests a kaleidoscope of talents used the phrase ‘sensation junkies’ and left me feeling (oddly enough) that it could be used to describe me and the way my most "real" self wants to live. I say it often... it’s all about the FEEL. Wellness especially... when we FEEL good, we radiate kindness, we emanate joy and we are beautiful. Purposeful movement, purposeful stillness, purposeful nourishment = feeling good! It’s a simple equation of consistent dedication to self-study/love. Worth making time for every day.

So let’s get back to ‘sensation junkies’. We, as humans are fueled by the feel, whether we want to admit it or not. Some of which could be harmful to our health if we aren’t mindful. I noticed this in myself during the YTT(so much gratitude for Leilani: https://www.facebook.com/leilanireidyoga), I was high on life during the yoga philosophy, connected and grounded. As soon as I left that bubble my senses were bombarded by everyday life; grocery lists, bills, studio needs, etc. Anger was the sensation. I was ultra-aware of the shift and wanted so desperately to hold onto the other that a tug of war ensued and I was a hot mess of confusion. Still working on how to manage and stay in a soft place more often than not. The sensation I am addicted to is … bliss. It’s almost impossible to explain. It’s that sweet spot between happy and sad. It is the ‘goldie locks’ state. It is my favourite sensation. I find it in stillness, meditation, running, buti, and yoga. It is sometimes fleeting and I ache for it like a child watching a balloon that’s escaped my hand. What I’m learning is to be gentle with myself, to go internal... that feeling resides there, and I can quench my thirst anytime. The trick? To unplug my mind, and gift myself even 5 minutes to recharge that part of myself who has been hiding behind masks for 25 years (I’ll dive into that a bit more next time... it’s a sensitive subject).<who> Photo Credit: Dina McLeod

So I ask you all to be aware of what floats your boat... makes your heart smile... find a gentleness in that feeling, even for just a moment. Do you have ‘gadgets’ in your toolbox that enable you to shield yourself from unnecessary chaos? Perhaps a list (write them down) of phrases or mantras you can use to settle the triggers of trauma and human life. Tap back into that sweetness or sukha (look at me learning Sanskrit). It really is a beautiful life... it’s all yours... it’s waiting... LIVE IT NOW!
