Live it Now: The Gift of Wellness

Hello friends!

Cannot believe Christmas is just 19 days away.

Whether you celebrate it with traditions or religions or just time well spent with friends and family, my heart sends warm wishes your way! Regardless of your social standing, religious beliefs or personal feelings about the holiday season, it is a globally acknowledged season of ‘giving’.

So how about this year... you give to YOURSELF! Really, though... don’t just say .. yah..yah... I will. REALLY do it!

Good health is literally the gift that keeps on giving. When we eat healthy, our body responds with joy manifested physically by energy and restful sleep. When we choose not to fill our bodies with empty nutrients we empower it by allowing it to transform into the ‘machine’ it’s meant to be.

It helps us regulate hormones, for both men and women, offers us more patience and problem-solving skills. Makes us more productive in our daily lives. Processed foods, excessive alcohol consumption and extreme dieting are not what are brain/body wants.

They want REAL stuff... you know what it is.

One ingredient foods put together, by your hands... to make a meal. Or eat at wellness friendly local establishments.

A friend of mine is an amazing chef and exemplifies this standard within a fast-casual setting at HealthFare Restaurants in TCC.

Just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it’s not real!

At Oxygen Kamloops we are offering a free kick the sugar habit thanks to our new community friend Carly on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. Join us!

Healthy eating can be expensive, and processed foods can often be the only way to fill the cupboards when the budget it tight. The Kamloops Food Bank offered a great way to give back to our community with an advent calendar.

I am making the effort to go to the store every day to purchase something as healthy as possible to donate. So many people don’t have the luxury of going to the grocery store every day, so I will! A year-round, hunger-free community is the goal!

Let’s do this Kamloops!

I have always found that eating healthy, real food is the first step to the gift of wellness. It creates a change in the mind and body that at first can be quite subtle, then you realize you’re a happy little elf bouncing around smiling because you’re not crashing from the crap you’ve been ingesting.

The choice to move more will just happen naturally, your body will insist on it... it’s feeling so darn good it wants to dance a jig! Do it! Do it! Do it! With that in mind and the Kamloops Food Bank’s advent calendar idea... I encourage... not challenge.. You all to move every day this month! Today is Dec. 6, if you haven’t been moving much yet this month, let’s start today.

Here’s a list of possible ideas to take you to the 31st... 25 days of purposeful movement!

  1. Walk to your corner store, rather than driving.
  2. Park at the end of the mall parking lot for the extra steps.
  3. Make several trips to the car to unload the groceries rather than stumbling to manage them all at once.
  4. Shovel the walk and your neighbours.
  5. Take a hike, be mindful of the shoes you wear (yak tracks rock) pretty sure Runners Sole carries them
  6. Try snowshoeing .. on my list with the Dirty Feet Trail Series this year.
  7. Put on some Christmas tunes in the car and sing your heart out! (Diaphragm moves... this counts as mindful breathe work)
  8. Walk your dog... if you don’t have one borrow neighbours, even better invite your neighbour/friend to join you.
  9. Go inside for a day or two, walk the track at TCC.
  10. Go swimming, (attempting to float in my case)
  11. Oh yes... go for a float at Bliss Float Centre
  12. Go ice skating
  13. Sledding (walk up the hill, it doesn’t have to be a big one)
  14. Pull your kids (or borrow one if you don’t have any) around on a sled..surprisingly good workout!
  15. Avoid elevators and escalators! Take the stairs.
  16. Do you have a bathroom upstairs in your home? Use it... every time.
  17. Try cross-country skiing/skate skiing (www.overlanderskiclub.com/enjoy-our-trails/)
  18. Crank up your favourite playlist (apologies to friendly neighbours) and dance, dance, dance... then dance some more!
  19. Watching a Christmas movie? Every time they say the word ‘Christmas’ do 3-5 squats and/or pushups. (Whichever level suits you)
  20. Get back indoors on the blustery days and dribble a basketball/play catch with someone.
  21. Go to a TRU game! Jump and cheer enthusiastically!
  22. Support our Blazer Nation! (more jumping and cheering)
  23. If caught in the hustle and bustle of shopping madness, use the line up as a time to stand tall, distribute your weight evenly, soft bend in the knees, core strong... and breath! Yep.. It's mindful movement.
  24. If you’re out with friends downtown, walk to your next destination the long way. Enjoy the company!
  25. Get out to the Wildlights! Walk the park! It’s magical!

If you read all the way to the end of this lengthy post... you are amazing and I appreciate you!

Enjoy this crazy, wonderful time of year YOUR way. Start some new healthy habits NOW!

It’s your life... it’s waiting... live it now!
