Local eats: Treat yourself at the new 350 Bakehouse

For many years, 567 Bernard Avenue was home to the iconic Tripke's Bakery. Although we're sad to see them close their doors, a brand new bakery, 350 Bakehouse and Cafe, has moved in and they're baking up a ton of things for us to be excited about.

Owner and baker Ed opened the doors to 350 Bakehouse in March with his wife Lindsay, and they have been working tirelessly ever since to bring the community fresh-baked deliciousness in a laid-back atmosphere. They have completely gutted the space that was once Tripke's and created a beautiful, bright cafe with many enticing spots to sit and enjoy your coffee and pastry.

The most beautiful aspect of 350 Bakehouse is without a doubt their pastry display. Filled with donuts, cinnamon buns, danishes, bread and traditional European pastries, it's truly a beautiful sight.

Ed learned to bake from his father, who was a traditional Dutch baker. He has therefore been learning the Dutch techniques since his teens, and has been passionate about baking all throughout his life. Ed’s incredible dedication shows in his work, and it pays off in the form of incredible pastries of unbeatable quality.

Ed starts baking every morning at 2:30am (yes, 2:30!) so everything is fresh and ready by 7am. Everything he makes is made with love and his "special touch." He never takes shortcuts, and uses only the highest quality, fresh ingredients.

For example, their Ham & Cheese Croissant is made with homemade dough and house-roasted ham, their Apple Fritters follow an old Dutch family recipe (and if you get there early, they'll be warm out if the fryer), their carrot cake is made painstakingly with hand-grated fresh carrots and the breakfast and lunch options are inspired. It’s all fresh made (from scratch of course) and at a great price too.

To pair with your pastry, they're serving the excellent Lone Tree organic coffee from Summerland. Pop in for your morning brew, because parking downtown between 7-9am is free, and grab a morning treat straight out of the oven while you're at it. And, if you’re feeling generous, you can pick up a dozen donuts for your work buddies too!

You can smell the Bakery all the way from Richter if you're heading downtown in the early morning. What a way to wake up!

Because serving the freshest product possible is 350's number one priority, at the end of the day any leftover baked goods are donated to Goodwill. This way, the bakery can start from scratch again the next morning. Nothing is wasted, and you'll always know that you're getting the best they can give you.

Find these guys on Bernard between the Post Office and the Town Centre Mall. #TreatYoSelf with the flavours of fresh, down-to-earth, authentic baking, and get to know your new favourite spot downtown. You're going to want to try everything as soon as you see that pastry display!
