Kamloops Marathon
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) pursues excellence in all aspects of campus life. In addition to exceptional educational standards, students are exposed to numerous community, leadership, and athletic experiences. TRU is proud of its student athletes and presently has over 170 student athletes competing on eight teams in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) including basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming and cross-country. Additionally, TRU lends support to the varsity club program of men’s baseball as well as the TRU Cheer Team. TRU student athletes have to make a significant commitment of time and energy throughout the entire academic year. Being a competitive student athlete while attending classes to earn a university degree is challenging. Student athletes are required to maintain a rigorous practice and game schedule which includes significant travel, all while maintaining a full time course load. Student athletes depend on scholarship and bursary funding to help offset the cost of tuition and books, as they have little or no time for part-time jobs. The WolfPack sports teams play an important role in creating campus spirit and a strong athletic program enhances the experience of all students attending TRU.
When you have been an athlete all your life, juggling sports and school from a young age, it becomes second nature. And although academics comes first, we dedicate a great deal to our sport because we love it. We came to TRU to learn, grow, and achieve; our athletic and academic experiences have given us just that. The scholarships that are available, the season passes sold, and mentoring opportunities available for student athletes are a testament to the support of alumni, family, and friends of TRU. This support makes higher education while playing a university sport possible for many students and with that comes the key to other successes.
– Katie Sparrow, a fifth year student on the women’s soccer team.
