In Focus | Trina Redman of Kamloops Hot Yoga

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KamloopsBCNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Trina Redman

What do you always find yourself saying?

Honestly, I’ve a bit of a potty mouth so it’s best not printed here lol, let’s just say it rhymes with duck. BUT my favourite quote is "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." Lao Tzu. I repeat this to myself a lot and often in yoga classes.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?

Any day I'd pick my grandkids - 2, 5 & 7-years-old. They are loving, funny and see everything with fresh eyes.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I'm more of a background type person - public award - just thinking about a public award makes me sweat with anxiety.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Any, preferably all of the "Famous Five" Canadian suffragettes. I can't imagine the courage it took for these women to legally challenge status quo in Canada to have women recognized 'as persons'.

Who inspires you?
My grandma, she's 91-years-old.

What are three things on your bucket list?
I don't have a bucket list. I don't get it. I'm not a 'listy' person.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
I'd go more for an amazing kayak (currently mine is a Costco special) or stand up paddle board. Now if I had to have an enormous yacht, I'd call it Freedom.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
I'm really content with each day that I have had so far, that I just couldn't pick a day in the future to select. Who knows what the future has in store?

What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about noticing. So often it can seem like life is just whizzing by and in the busy-ness of this life so much beauty can be missed - around us, in nature, in relationships. There's an Aerosmith song "I don't want to miss a thing". I'm passionate about trying not to miss a thing.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Oh boy! I have so many favourite days - the big ones - when my parents were born, when I was born, when my kids were born, my grandkids were born, the day I met my partner Dwight - and then on Tuesday this week I was kayaking at Paul Lake just outside of Kamloops and that was a favourite day.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Raising new humans, my daughter and son. They are nice, kind, loving people and I am so proud of both of them.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kamloops? What do you like about it?
I eat way too much, so anyone who knows me will often see me at The Art We Are if I'm grabbing a healthy lunch. My second favourite place is Nandi's Flavours of India. Both are great, locally owned and operated businesses.

What is your favourite activity or event in Kamloops? Why?
Yoga of course at my studio, Pilates at Evolve Pilates Studio and the great outdoors! Snowshoeing in the winter and kayaking in the summer - so many choices of places to go.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Kamloops Hot Yoga. We have two locations, one on the north shore - known as the Brock studio and one of the south shore - the Sahali studio.

What does your business/organization do?
We are a yoga studio offering hot yoga, warm yoga and room temperature yoga. Although we are primarily a hot yoga studio, we are passionate about offering yoga in a way that is accessible to most, the emphasis on yoga for health and wellness. Our studio community is very diverse with a range of abilities within each class.

What is your mission?

Kamloops Hot Yoga's mission is to touch as many lives as possible with the power and wisdom of Yoga. We recognize Yoga as an ancient tradition, capable of enriching all aspects of modern life. Through accessible, extensive class offerings, workshops & private instruction options; our mission is to introduce everyone to the adventurous journey of yoga and all the magic that follows.

Kamloops Hot Yoga encourages each individual's personal growth while fostering a sense of community and friendship. We will keep our prices as affordable as possible while drawing on the best teachers available. We respect and honour all of our teachers and students, past, present and future. They have guided us to where we are now and will be in the future.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
If it would be one thing it would be that people would recognize that movement is medicine, yoga is a way to move that is therapeutic and health enhancing. You do not need to be a pretzel or made of elastic to benefit from moving your body in yoga. Yoga is for everybody.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?

In five years I’d like to still be offering quality, safe, creative and challenging yoga classes in Kamloops. In addition, I’d like to maintain our strong focus on community outreach with free classes, classes in the community, classes for all levels and abilities, karma classes and donations to organizations/Agencies/charities in our area that are making Kamloops a better place for everyone.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
There are many forerunners in yoga generally, specifically in the hot yoga field it began with Bikram yoga in the 1970’s and the hot yoga traditions that branched out from there – especially Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson who founded Moksha yoga, Tony Sanchez out of Mexico.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Accessibility, public service, excellence in teaching yoga

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?

Without our employees and trade volunteers, there would be no Kamloops Hot Yoga. It is as simple as that. Our teachers, managers, front desk staff and trades are all amazing representatives of the whole of Kamloops Hot Yoga. We are grateful for the amazing people we get to spend our time with.

How does your business/organization impact the community?

Prior to owning a studio I was a social worker. Public service and outreach is integral for social work as well as yoga philosophically, we have many strategies to do our best to make the world a better place. We don’t believe that our yoga stays on the mat – it should be moving off the mat and into the world. On Fridays we offer karma drop-in classes and all money raised goes to charities in Kamloops, we offer free weekly classes to those facing barriers for a variety of reasons, July & August we offer free weekly yoga classes at McDonald Park, we donate passes for groups to use for fund raising and in February a group from our studio went to the Philippines through Developing World Connections to build a house for a family.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Marketing. I would want to talk to them about marketing and business growth, best strategies.

If I could change one thing about Kamloops, it would be:
I LOVE Kamloops except (I know this won’t make me popular) the smell from the pulp mill.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
Location, location, location, and people, people, people! Kamloops is in a great location in the interior to get anywhere else in the province and the people here are generous and kind.

My choice for the Kamloops In Focus spotlight is:
Janette Fessenden – she’s currently opening Kamloops’ first Float Centre.

Some general comments I would like to share are:

Thanks so much for the opportunity to talk about my business and the things that I’m passionate about!
