Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?

I was born in High Level, Alberta. We moved to Kamloops before I was two years old. After graduation I moved away for a few years but have always felt it was our home. We have lived in Kamloops, Ashcroft or Logan Lake over the last 6 1/2 years.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Jennifer Schell! Not only is she my wife, she is my bestie and soul mate. We have plenty of laughs and good times together.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Canadian Tire. They have a wide range of products at very competitive prices. Helpful staff.

Describe yourself in one word.
Determined.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Pebble Beach. I would love to play that course.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Taking the kids to play at Riverside or MacArthur Parks. Watching the kids play and enjoy themselves carefree. Love all the Parks!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

While visiting Disneyland, one of the female characters of the show we were watching came off the stage and kissed me on the cheek. As a young boy it was very embarrassing! Red lipstick!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Becoming a father. Without a doubt. Jennifer, (my wife), had some complications during the birth of our firstborn son, Logan. The first time I ever held a child was this moment, and I had to do everything for the first few days. Bathing, feeding, burping, changing, etc... These times really placed a purpose in my life to be something, to be someone.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
That's a tough one. My father and I used to play golf together quite a bit. It's something we have "put on the back burner" now that I have young children. When I was 11 years old, I shot a hole-in-one on the 2nd hole out at Rivershore Golf Course. Still can't believe it!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
The 2nd Sunday of each month, I hold a service at the Hamlets in Westside. We meet at 2:30 p.m., sing a few hymns together and then dive into a message. I feel it important to bring a good service to seniors who cannot make it out to services anymore. I am Treasurer of Berean Baptist Church in Kamloops. I volunteer my services to make sure the budgets and ledgers all line up.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Clean drinking water and healthy food for all humanity. So many are going without...I could go on and on, we see the problems humanity is facing in third world countries.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Hiking in Peterson Creek.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?

More affordable housing for single income / single parent families. Young families have a hard battle to provide for themselves and keep their families safe.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The people of course!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I would love to go to Israel and do a Holy-land type tour.
I want to race around the Nurburgring. Car of choice would be a Jaguar XKR-S. Love the exhaust note on it.
Taking my boys dog-sledding in Whistler, B.C. They love Huskies! I believe this would also take an item of their bucket lists. :)

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
Music stirs my emotions. If the right song plays at the right time, I may shed a tear.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
At the gym, over a cup of coffee, at Church, running around the park with kids. Walking around Logan Lake. I can also be reached on Facebook, Twitter (@papa_schell), Instagram (@papaschell7) and LinkedIn.

What is the name of your business/organization?
IG Wealth Management.

Why did you get into/start this business?

I have a heart to help Canadians make wise personal and financial decisions. What started as a hobby of giving financial and budgeting advice has turned into my career.

What is the goal of your business?
I am determined to help people in Kamloops and the surrounding areas to retire with dignity. To be prepared for what life may throw at them, to equip the next generation.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Watching families and people I know enduring hardships.

What do you always find yourself saying?
"I should have been a cop!" Through analysis and investigations, my hunches are usually proved to be right.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Invest young, invest early, invest something. Not only in finance but in people.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Warren Buffett. A lifetime of lessons and wisdom to glean from.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?

Supporting our local business' helps create a more stable, recession-resistant local economy.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
The character my children are beginning to show. They have a heart for serving others. Helping when they can where they can.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Pastor Gregory Vaal. He is tirelessly working to improve the North Shore through Berean Baptist Church. He has a real desire to reach the hearts of the people of Kamloops and to change lives.

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Gregory Vaal.

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I am very grateful that I had this opportunity to show Kamloops a little bit of myself. I look forward to working and playing in this community, meeting more great people and continuing to change lives.
