In Focus | Lane Gagnon

Lane was born and raised in Edmonton and moved to Kamloops almost a year and a half ago. Lane is a local entrepreneur who owns the clothing brand known as Wild Pine Supply Co.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?

My girlfriend Dana and our three dogs, Betty, Bo and Hazel.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Far & Wide! I love that store because the two women that own it are lovely, passionate, hardworking humans. The store itself is brand new and it features so many amazing products from across this beautiful country!

Describe yourself in one word.
Conscientious

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Can I pick two places? Indonesia for sure! But also Tofino with my cousin Tyler.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Kayaking on the endless lakes that surround us.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I always seem to think of when I walked into a street sign face first. It sure made my friend's little boy giggle.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
This one is hard for me to answer because I keep going back to some really hard times. There was a loss in my family, not once, but two times in three months. That loss was devastating but it has propelled me to always be the best version of myself and to chase my dreams. It also allowed me to witness some of the purest forms of love between family and friends. It's hard to believe that such beauty can come from such tragedy. When people experience something painful together they come together in ways that are inspiring. Even strangers come forward to lend a hand and to share their love. I am grateful for the stronger bond between my loved ones and I know my two cousins are guiding me on this journey.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I loved riding my bike, hanging out with my grandma, playing soccer, and spending time at swimming holes with my cousins on Vancouver Island.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
The majority of my volunteer work has been with youth and the LGBTQ2S+ community back in Edmonton but I'm starting to get connected here in Kamloops. I am looking forward to some of the opportunities that are coming my way.
Also, for every Pride Tee sold through my clothing line $10 will be donated to an LGBTQ2S+ group or organization. These shirts are in their final stage of production and will be available very soon.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
How people treat the planet, animals included.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Cooney Bay is always calling my name.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
I could do without the smell of the pulp mill. On a serious note, I would love to see a Pride Centre go up as it would provide endless support to so many people.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
I love how easy it is to live an outdoor lifestyle here. There are so many lakes, rivers, trails and waterfalls!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Years ago I started a list...100 things to do before my 35th birthday. I'm just realizing as I type this that I only have a year left. I don't have the list with me right now but three things that may or may not be on the list:

  1. Start a travel blog
  2. Go camping in Tofino
  3. Go for a hot air balloon ride

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I don't like wearing socks.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook, Instagram,

What is the name of your business/organization?
Wild Pine Supply Co.

Why did you get into/start this business?
Honestly, it was an instinctive feeling. I had just a strong sense that this was something I was meant to do. I have such a love for the outdoors and I want to share it with the world. I want to inspire people to connect with nature.

What is the goal of your business?
To provide people with quality clothing and goods that are comfortable and will inspire them to spend more time outdoors!

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Change is hard for me and adjusting takes some time but I always come out on the other end stronger and wiser.

What do you always find yourself saying?
"Bo, stop barking!"

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Always trust in two things: your gut, and the universe. They won't steer you wrong.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I would love to hang out with Alex MacLean of East Coast Lifestyle. He has inspired me. I want to pick his brain!

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It's important because it helps a dream become a reality. It supports the local economy and it creates community. I know I feel so much pride when someone loves my clothing enough to wear it and show it off! Supporting local empowers people!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Wild Pine is up there for me! I also started something in Edmonton called YEG Youth Connect. It's an annual event for youth who are experiencing homelessness. This is the 5th year and I am so proud of the people that are continuing to make it happen!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I'd love to give a shout out to my girlfriend Dana because she is running a successful business here in town. She works super hard to bring topnotch services to her clients and she is so giving of herself to all of them!

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Dana Kushner - Serenity Now Massage
