Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?

I'm born and raised in Kamloops and love it here!

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My father, Glen Martin. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and life is short. I'm very proud of how he handles himself in the face of adversity.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Alchemy Brewing Co. The owners are friends of mine and I'm inspired by the adversity they went through to open their business and make it successful. Plus I enjoy the beer...

Describe yourself in one word.
Ambitious.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Newcastle, Australia. I have friends there I'd like to spend some time with and its nice and hot this time of year. ;)

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
I love the fishing around Kamloops and driving out on trails around town to see the scenery. There's not much like it in the world.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I once called Telus and ranted about my internet. They couldn't find my account for about 30 minutes which was very frustrating for me. Turns out my provider was Shaw. Whoops.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
When I was young my mother had a problem with alcohol and through thick and thin my father stayed by her side. She has now been sober now for over 20 years and spoken to a lot of people about the challenges to help them. My father was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2007 and eventually she is his rock. Everything is symbiotic, you get back what you put in with relationships and loyalty is important. If he hadn't been there for her then she wouldn't have been here for him today. They've been together for over 40 years strong.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Going to East Barrier Lake in the summers. It's such a beautiful and warm lake. It used to be a hidden gem but it's been a lot more popular in recent years.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
In the past, I worked a lot with the food bank when I was on the coast and had a bakery. I would like to do that again with my new company, Mitchie's Delivery. It's a good cause and I think there could be a lot of synergy there between them and a delivery company.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would love to be able to remove the politics from a lot of research funding. I feel the red tape inhibits a lot of growth that could or will lead to cures and vaccines.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
four-by-fouring up around Greenstone Mountain. It's serene and and there are some amazing views out there.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
It would be nice to see downtown and Tranquille see continued revitalization. I think they're great spots for businesses to open and add to the culture and community for Kamloops. I think we've been making some nice strides in the last couple of years.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The community and small-town feel to our city. The people here lookout for one another.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Seeing Metallica Live someday before they're done touring.
2. Doing some more travelling, particularly Europe.
3. I would love to hike the West Coast Trail.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I almost died from a virus when I was travelling in Australia some years ago. I lost 50 lbs and spent eight days in intensive care. All is good now.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
I definitely use Facebook and Instagram mostly. I use LinkedIn for business and Twitter mostly to follow the news.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Mitchie's Delivery.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I became an owner at the beginning of October of this year joining a friend of mine, Mitch Hughes.

What is the goal of your business?
To provide a service for all of Kamloops and gives back to the community.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Staying organized and work-life balance. I have spent an enormous amount of time in the last 10 years trying to figure these out. The organization is mostly all set but balance not so much.

What do you always find yourself saying?
"If you have a problem then bring me a solution." I think there is always a solution.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Think outside of the box and get creative to figure something out. Your mind is the only thing holding you back.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
I would love to spend a day with Elon Musk. I just feel he thinks about the world and solutions from a very different perspective than most of us. He can be controversial at times but if you fast forward 50 years in the future I think he'll be remembered as one of the great thinkers of our time.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It keeps our money local, supporting families and the businesses pay taxes that improve the conditions and infrastructure in our community.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I have employed a lot of people over the years and have seen them go on to do some impressive things. It's nice to see people do positive things and know in some small way you were apart of it.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My mother, Sandy Martin. You're a rock that brings stability to the whole family.

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Alan Renner.
