Saying goodbye to Smiley the blind therapy dog

On Saturday, October 14th, Smiley, a blind therapy dog from Stouffville Ont., sadly passed away after more than 12 years of bringing joy to the planet.

Smiley, who was born without eyes and spent two years in a puppy mill before being rescued, had gained popularity across the web for his heartwarming story of lifting spirits everywhere he went.

smiley's owner, Joanne George, posted the news on social media yesterday afternoon, along with a tribute photo for her beloved companion.

“The little dog with such a huge purpose has been let go,” George writes. “He left us so quietly and peacefully in his favourite spot today at 12:30.”

“I hope he is running free and can finally see the beauty around him.”

Smiley was a certified therapy dog with the St. John Ambulance. Smiley’s social media channels were updated with stories of inspiration, as the courageous and loving pup overcame his disabilities to help others.

He made a difference in many lives as he taught young children about bullying and acceptance, and made some famous friends along the way.

In July of this year, George made the difficult announcement that a tumour had been found on Smiley’s stomach and liver, and that his time with us was nearing an end.

George asked Smiley’s followers to do something in his honour after delivering the news of his departure.

“Please be kind to one another, give back, and always see with your heart.”
