Canada Post carriers awarded 25% pay hike after pay equity ruling

Canada Post workers across the country have been given a significant pay increase after a pay equity decision was announced today.

A ruling has determined that for the majority of the mostly-female rural and urban carriers, there will be a 25% pay hike and an increase in benefits.

The union argued Canada Post’s 8,000 rural carriers — most of whom are women — were being paid significantly less than their majority-male urban co-workers.

“Pay equity is a basic human right and therefore pay disparity on the basis of gender is wholly unacceptable for Canada Post,” said Canada Post's Chair of the Board of Directors and Interim President and CEO, Jessica McDonald.

The increase amounts to up to $13,000 a year, not including benefits.

“We will move quickly to implement the pay and benefits changes for employees. To achieve that, we have already agreed to a joint process with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to manage the implementation,” said McDonald.

McDonald added that negotiations for a new collective agreement are still underway, but they “remain positive on the progress being made.”
