The deputy mayor of Saint John is sick of the negative news about her city.
As a result, Shirley McAlary is calling for a four-month ban on negative news about New Brunswick’s port city.
While she was speaking somewhat in jest when calling for the ban, she says national stories don’t need to dwell on things like the city’s declining population.
She says there’s a great quality of life in Saint John and the public, media and city council need to put the city in a positive light to convince others to move there.
Recent media coverage has honed in on stories like the Oland murder trial, as well as recent explosions at the Irving refinery and a metal recycling plant on the waterfront.
McAlary says the city needs to do a better job of marketing itself, which starts with what its residents tell others.
