Canadian teacher gets 6 months in jail for filming students’ chests with a pen camera

A former high school teacher in London, Ont. has been sentenced for secretly filming the chests of 27 female students aged 14 to 18.

Ryan Jarvis received a six-month jail term for the crimes involving “young female adolescents,” which occurred in 2010 and 2011.

He used a pen camera to record the students’ chests while he talked to them, something Superior Court Justice Andrew Goodman called “morally repugnant and professionally objectionable.

"This offence can be classified as a breach of trust perpetrated on young female adolescents," Goodman said. "The significant denunciatory effect of jail is required."

Goodman noted the impact Jarvis’ actions had on his victims when handing down the sentence on Tuesday.

"It had lasting effects on me, even to this day, nine years later," M.W., who was a 14−year−old student when Jarvis videoed her, said in a victim impact statement.

"It has had an effect on my relationships with men, even today."

In addition to jail time, Jarvis also received 12 months probation during which time he can’t have any contact with any of his victims.

He was already stripped of his teaching licence in April after admitting to professional misconduct.
