Nine months after the Federal Court of Appeal overturned Ottawa’s approval of the Trans Mountain expansion project, it’s back on the docket today.
The federal cabinet will be reconsidering the project at its weekly meeting this morning and it’s widely expected that it will get approval once again.
International Trade Minister Jim Carr said on Monday that the pipeline decision is “very significant.”
"It’s all about moving our resources to export markets but doing it in a responsible and sustainable way in consultation with Indigenous communities and with an eye on environmental stewardship," he said.
"Those are the pillars we have been talking about and that we will honour and continue to honour."
Construction was halted after last summer’s court decision, but even with approval today it wouldn’t resume for a number of weeks, if not months.
Trans Mountain Canada confirmed on Monday that an updated construction schedule for the project won’t be made until the government gives its approval.
Today’s decision isn’t likely to be announced until after the markets close for the day.
