Health Canada issues recall for several blood pressure medications

Health Canada has announced that drug manufacturers are recalling several medications.

The drugs being recalled are used to treat patients with high blood pressure to prevent heart attacks and stroke, and also for patients who have had heart failure or a recent heart attack.

An impurity has been found in the ingredient valsartan, which is present in all recalled medications, the impurity is a potential carcinogen that could cause liver damage and cancer over the long-term.

There has also been a recall made by the European Medicines Agency for the same medications across Europe.

Health Canada advises consumers to keep taking their valsartan-containing medicine, but to check with their pharmacist to see whether their medication is being recalled:
