Hospital seeing improvement from injured occupants of Ottawa bus crash

Individuals who were injured when a double-decker city bus crashed into a transit shelter in Ottawa on Friday are improving, a local hospital said Sunday.

The patients who were previously listed in critical condition are now considered to be in serious condition, said the Ottawa Hospital in a tweet on Sunday.

According to the Ottawa Hospital’s website, critical condition means “vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. There are major complications and indications are unfavourable.”

In comparison, the patients are now deemed in serious condition, which is characterized by patients being “acutely ill. Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. There are major complications.”

On Saturday, the Ottawa Hospital made an update confirming that in relation to the bus crash, they currently had one patient in critical condition, six patients in serious condition and four patients in stable condition.

Three occupants were killed and 23 were injured during the crash on Friday when the bus drove over a curb and collided with the shelter. A portion of the vehicle’s second level was demolished and several seats were crushed by the impact.

The investigation into the crash continues. Police officers are collaborating with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and Transport Canada to probe the incident.
