International flights halted at gates, US flights cancelled due to fire at Toronto airport

International flyers were delayed after a fire broke out at Toronto’s Pearson airport Sunday evening.

According to Peel Regional Police, who published a tweet shortly before 4 p.m., they attended a fire in Terminal 1 at the Pearson International Airport.

“Passengers have been evacuated from the affected area. No reports of injuries,” they said in the post.

The first was confirmed as extinguished by Toronto Pearson shortly after 4 p.m. As of about 4:30 p.m., Police say that a significant amount of water and smoke existed as a result of the fire being extinguished.

Toronto Pearson initially stated that the International and US aircraft at Terminal one were “holding at their gates,” but they have since notified passengers that “all flights to the US scheduled to depart from Terminal 1 have been cancelled.”

Peel Regional Police say that while few patients have been treated for smoke-related injuries, no major injuries from the fire have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
